Suddenly, Lily seemed real. Reading the historical note in the newspaper flipped a switch, fully connecting her current project with a woman who had lived there over 120 years earlier.
Willaâs text message indicator chimed, and she checked her phone.
CAN YOU COME UP AND LOOK AT LILYâS ROOMS? I COULD USE A LITTLE HELP, Sue had texted.
Willa jabbed at the Y, shorthand for yes, and headed up to their project room. What had they gotten themselves into? If Sue was also having issues, maybe they both needed to reconsider what they were going to do. But Sue was so close to achieving her dream of her own show, a failure on something like this could really discourage her.
The door to their makeover room stood open. A well-muscled guy with skin the shade of Pantoneâs Iced Coffee exited. Dressed in cream-colored coveralls, he pushed a dolly piled high with boxes of debris from the room. He turned. It was David Williford, a well-known disc jockey in the area. Sheâd met the love interest of their boss, Aimee, the day before.
Willa cocked her head at the man. âYou are a man of many talents.â
He paused in his efforts. âWhat Aimee wants, Aimee gets.â He waggled his eyebrows. âAnd today she needed a construction bum. She knows I used to do that kind of work in Detroit.â
âSeriously?â
âThat was before I got my DJ company set up here at the Straits.â
âThatâs an interesting switch. Was someone in your family involved in music?â
Sadness flickered over his strong features. âIâm afraid Iâm the family disappointment.â
Oops, TMI. âOhââ
He looked at her stricken face and shook his head. âNothing bad like that. Iâm the only Williford in generations who wasnât in law enforcement.â
âReally?â
âYeah. In fact, one of my ancestors from way back worked here at the hotel before he moved to Detroit and met my great-greatâmany greats anywayâgrandmother. She was a singer.â
âYouâre following in your many-greats-grandmotherâs footsteps?â
His face brightened. âYeah, I guess you could look at it like that. I do it all, and I heard she played piano, sang, and composed music too.â
âThatâs a nice legacy.â
âSure thing, but my dad always pictured me in a cherry-top cop car chasing criminals down the interstate.â He shrugged.
âWhat do you enjoy most?â
âRight now, Iâm digginâ being with the most amazing woman Iâve ever met.â If there could be literal stars shining in someoneâs eyes, theyâd be glowing in Davidâs big brown eyes right now. âItâll be chill, working on this project to help Aimee.â
Attired in a gauzy retro tie-dyed kaftan with a matching face mask, Sue emerged from the adjacent room, holding several swaths of fabric. âIf I were you, Iâd have asked Aimee for more than just dinner at the Woods. Why not demand that a little plaque be put up in here with your name on it?â Sue set the cloth down.
âIâll stick with the dinner.â David pushed the dolly forward toward the door. âHave a good afternoon, ladies.â He sang a line from the Weekndâs single âBlinding Lightsâ as he headed out.
